(Rick is a major hardwood dealer out of Oxford, PA, if you were unfamiliar) Rick has a personal collection of only ten boards, which is a promise he made to himself in order to avoid becoming a hoarder. I remember walking into his office one time and seeing a board of maple that was perfectly uniformly quilted top to bottom, side to side, front to back, with a perfectly uniformly sized, absolutely stunning quilting pattern, the board being about 8/4, 10" wide and maybe 6' long. For sale? No, PRS Guitars had purchased it when it had been there about a day - it was getting shipped out the following Monday. The board was amazing - way more stunning than anything I have ever seen anyone post on a forum. (Anything!)
"So, Rick, would that have been close to making it into your personal stash?"
"No, not really"
Got to see that someday.
Hearne Hardwoods.... Almost purchased a large board a while back, though it's tough to justify spending $1600 for a piece of wood. I try to find stuff for the cheapest price I can. I want to make the pilgrimage there too. I have some above-decent boards of quilt and tiger stripe, but nothing crazy.
I paid about $8/bf for each of the mahogany boards, and I almost didn't want to pay that. I bought the walnut billet a long time ago and I don't think I have $100 into it. If you're PRS, you can outbid everyone else for good stuff. I work the opposite way. The tiger stripe mahogany above... I bought a similar board a while back for the electric guitar challenge, at about $3/bf! And I had about 30bf of the stuff!

Keep that well locked up. I don't like the way those faces are looking out at me.

Here's a piece of Zebrawood that is 2 in thick, x 8 1/2 in wide, x 32 in long.
That's large enough for the back of a few acoustic guitars, or the top of 5 or 6 electrics.
Probably going to go with either an alder back, or a walnut back on the electrics.
It is simply plain right now, no water or anything on it to show grain.

Looks to be raining Zebrawood. Here's a billet I got really cheap. 1m x 235mm x 26mm(39x9.5x1+ inches)
2 Acoustic sets plus a Uke or a couple electric drop tops.....
Probably acoustic as it's well quartered.
Not as fancy a graining as the previous one, but it'll do....

I found this 8' long 1x8 at menards of all places! The figure is like this through almost the whole board. I think it could make a few nice top sets.

I found a nice 1x6 like that at Home Depot a couple months back. I always stop by the maple rack and pick through it for particularly pretty, or just nice and clear, boards.

The coloration that you see is ambrosia .
There is quite a bit of that in my area . It is caused by a beetle . A chemical signature of it's presence . It causes the only blue coloring typically found in wood . I don't think you will find this beetle out west .
This is red maple , but I have a silver maple that is just loaded with ambrosia .
Sort of a Rorschach test figure .
