saddle for electric bass

I am trying to design a couple of custom instruments. In the past I have either used a pre-made neck or used a pre-slotted nut and off-the-shelf bridge. I am contemplating making an acoustic-style bridge. I will run the strings through the body to eliminate the need for a seperate string retainer. I am trying to design a saddle that I would be able to make at home, and which would allow for individual intonation adjustment.

I know several of you have built your own bridge and tail pieces. Can any of you offer some examples or ideas of how to do this? Thanks a lot.
