Need the name of top violin restorers, appraisers and sellers for an Italian violin from 1774
I am helping a friend of mine liquidate a collection of instruments that her late husband collected. One is a violin from Johannes Jais dated 1774. The violin has some cracks on the top but seems to be in good condition. In addition to the repair work that I think will need to be done, I need some idea of who to contact to appraise and sell (at retail or auction) this instrument. I am located in the San Francisco Bay area (Pebble Beach) but I am willing to get the violin to the right person where ever they may be. Thanks fro your help!

If I were in your position I would first contact Matt Bohn (The Bass Doctor) in Santa Cruz to look the instrument over and have him give you a recommendation. He isn't snooty but has been formally trained, and I like him.
You can also look up the web site of the AFVBM (American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers) for a list of their members, all of which are considered masters of their craft. Prepare yourself for a rather snooty world of violins, it costs money for appraisals, and the owner must be present for ethical reasons. Violins can be worth a lot of money and there are some "experts" and "friends" that will take advantage of unsuspecting folks.
Don't do any work to the instrument before you present it to the experts.
