how to restring an Oahu lap acoustic

Recently purchased a vintage Oahu square neck, slot head lap acoustic. I removed the old string to clean it up and do some minor repairs. When I went to restring it, the tuner posts have no holes, only a 1/4 inch shallow slot. Can anyone tell me how to attach the strings to the tuner shafts??

Put the string in the slot and bend the tail end in the opposite direction as the other side.
