I wonder how they keep the wood from drying out and cracking? I'm also curious what they used for the skin head?

The maker clearly knows his material and knows the instrument. Very few measurements are shown. Unless he left that out, other than a than those few templates, he’s simply proportioning and eyeballing. I wonder how much natural variation is expected in each tar.

I don't know about the first issue, but I read somewhere that the traditional material for the skin is lamb's bladder!
