Gibson SG wood ?

In planning to build an SG I am at once confronted with the right wood to use.
I assume that the 1st ones ('61's) were made with Honduras Mahogany but, as you know, African Mohog. is most available.
Does anyone think that there would a preference between the two kinds of wood?

Certainly honduran mahogany would be preferable. African would be my second choice, but it would still make a nice guitar.

African might make a slightly heavier guitar, but it would also have a bit more dent resistant surface. I would look at the grain in the individual piece (and for that matter the weight - the averages are only 3 lbs apart, so you may find some African lighter than some Honduran).
