Obviously, this is an old-timely illustration of a forced draft spray booth, but I think the concept may work just fine. Any opinions?

It could work but remember you want to get a laminar flow through the rear filter area of around 100 feet per minute. A vacuum cleaner motor is going to have a hard time inducing that much flow without several many HP. Maybe Dyson to do it but is it really explosion proof? The VOCs are generally heavier than air so you'd hate for them to drop into the vac motor and wait for the next time you turn it on.
A typical small guitar booth will have 2-3 20" x 20" filter panels so 420-630 cfm minimum including filter drag, elbows and so forth x 2 or 3 if you don't have ready makeup air.

A manometer for calculation of airflow might be useful for the development.
