For all the bozos on the bus

Post by Tom Harper »

I just got a note from an old high school friend saying that Peter Bergman of the Firesign Theatre passed away. Here is a link to some info about him:

Robin Williams once described the FIresign Theatre's work an an "audio Hieronymus Bosch". Here is an example of their work:

Jeez Tom, that really dates us to the latter Devonian period doesn't it? They had a previous interview with him on NPR tonight on my drive home and did that ever bring back memories. I could remember every line of the excerpts as if it was last night, half a dozen friends crammed into one room, lights off, 8th beer, and a funny smell in the air...oh man, what fond memories.
I'm going to have to find a few of those albums and pass them on to my son.

Yep, I have a lot of wonderful memories of that same evening you describe, or at least I think I do. Some are kind of vague... Glad I survived that era :).

Coincidentally, I just picked up LP copies of We're All Bozos and How Can You Be In Two Places At Once When You're Not Anywhere At All at a used record store about 6 weeks ago.

You know what they say about that era... if you remember the 60's, you weren't there.

Really sad to hear. I too, spent countless hours of "quality time" listening to FT. Back in the day we would constantly speak Firesign to each other. The uninitiated had no clue what we were talking about, they just thought we were weird. And, I guess we were. :)

Anybody remember doing a zilch? Take a thin plastic bag like cleaners use to protect clothes, twist it up tightly and tie knots in it about an inch apart. Hang it from the ceiling, put a pan of water underneath it, and light the bottom. The plastic melts as it burns and drops little flaming balls into the water, making an interesting sound as they fall into the water below. I'm assuming that's the funny smell to which you reefer. :D

Yep, I remember those. We had several lining the entrance to our college house for a Halloween party. I'm glad the fire marshall didn't see this.

Barry, that wasn't the University of Houston in the early 70's by any chance, was it?

Or putting a tsp of lighter fluid on the bottom of a beer can and lighting it. As it burned down to the last drops they would run around the edge of the can.
