Press-formed Harmony & F-holes

Post by Alan Peterson »

I'm spending time at the very entertaining site Harmony.Demont.Net, checking out a lot of real American classics.

The company used to press-form a lot of their spruce archtop guiars, rather than carve them. Anyone know if they cut the F-holes
before or after the tops were pressed?

Due to possible heat related distortion and/or cracks from the f-hole, I would place my money on after.

You might be able to tell by looking at the angle the edge makes with the top. They would have used a pin router, so if the angle is at 90 degrees to the curve of the top, probably done before. If the angle is at 90 degrees to the plane of the top of the sides, probably done after.
