Using large decal on back of solid body

Am trying to figure out a means to print out an aztec design of Mictecacihuatl the Queen of the Underworld to the back of my guitar.
One idea is to use a large decal on the back, if finish over the decal on headstocks causes the decal edges to disappear, is this likely with a large decal on the back? My concerns are that the edges will show and it will look like a decal on the back of the guitar and the other concern is that with use the decal will be worn off. I am hoping that the finish will protect it. I am planning to use gun oil or mini wax wipe on poly. Not looking for a smooth finish since aztec art is a bit crude.

Cool Idea! it depends on the kind of finish you use, and how much of it you put on. I don't think either of the wipe-on finishes you mention would build enough to seal the edges of a decal. I would spray lacquer if I could.

I think I would try to put the decal on between coats of shellac or water based lacquer. The decal will work best over a very smooth surface. I have sandwiched small decals on models this way using waterborne lacquer. I don't know if shellac works on decals but it will bond to most surfaces. The problems with a large decal may be those of smooth application and uniform adhesion. It probably goes without saying but the back will need a tough finish to protect it from buckle scratches. As always test on scrap wood and extra decals first.

You probably want something more like a urethane to protect it from bucklerash over time

Great ideas, I plan to get an extra decal so I can try different things and is going over veneer which I have extra. The design is very intricate and so a decal makes sense if I can make it work.

How will you make the decal?
I've seen some printable decal material at the hobby store, but have never tried it.
I think it was a water-slide type of material.
I'm doing a guitar with a Quetzalcoatl figure.
Thought about an inlay, but way too much work. Also considering painting it on somehow.
