Source for experimenter's piezos

Post by Alan Peterson »

Now that Radio Shack is circling the drain, what might be a good alternate source for cheap experimental piezo elements?
When they stop selling that buzzer, it will be a dark day for electric cigar box players everywhere.

I don't know what they have just now because their stock constantly changes but I have found all sorts of useful things, including piezo elements, from American Science and Surplus. Try and use the type that are meant for speakers and buzzers.

I've gotten a lot of good cheap stuff, including piezos, from here in the past: http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/p ... ?dept=1108
Maybe I can't fix it, but I can fix it so no one can fix it

I bought mine at the European counterpart of http://ex-en.alliedelec.com/ , in the Netherlands they only deliver at companies. I don't know if this applies for the USA.
Further you could try http://www.aliexpress.com , they have the discshaped piezo pickups but you could also buy some under saddle piezopickups, I bought a badge a while ago and they work fine.

I'm fond of these guys..... http://www.midwestsurplus.net/

Under audio indicators/transducers are listed some enclosed piezo elements, but I'm pretty sure when I was there last week they had hundreds of bare piezo elements in several different diameters, but I couldn't locate them on the website.

You might want to call or email them. Only downside here is likely shipping costs, but those raw elements sure don't weigh much and I'm thinking they were mostly well under a dollar or so.

One of the Radio Shack's here is closed and the building totally empty now, another was closed and the building was demolished this week. Yet another is still open, has no sale or clearance signs and has a bunch of new inventory. So it appears they are under chapter 11, not chapter 13 as I was originally led to believe.

Woa, these guys have all sorts of cool stuff. Piezo setups from the most basic (piezo rod straight into a jack) to fancier systems (preamp with EQ), not to mention all the bits and pieces to DIY it. Page- bookmarked.

Not quite as cheap as some of these other sources, but Schatten makes a soundboard piezo which is better than most cheap buzzer disks. Just over $20 at StewMac and other sources. I have one in my cittern, along with a Pick-Up-The-World transducer (to a stereo jack). The PUTW blows it away, but it is still nice for blending some extra high end.
