Here is an idea for a simple musical instrument called the Psalmodikon that I am currently building.
The psalmodicon, (or psalmodikon), is typically a single-stringed musical instrument, developed in Scandinavia for simplifying music in churches and schools, and providing an alternative to the fiddle for sacred music. The instrument could be plucked or bowed. Beginning in the early 19th century, it was adopted by many rural churches in Scandinavia; later, immigrants brought the instrument to the United States.








Notice the unusual "sawtooth fretboard" that is sometimes used on the Psalmodikon.


I will have it playing soon and I'll post more information on how it is working out,

What was/is the intent of the saw-tooth fret board?

Bob, I looked at many different examples of Psalmodikon's and noticed that some used a sawtooth fretboard that I had never heard of before. So I guess that instead of attaching metal frets to the fretboard, it is another way of fretting that only involves working with wood. I decided to try the sawtooth version and see how it works and was amazed that it works very well and isn't awkward to use at all. I'll try and post a video soon so that everyone can see it in operation.

I think the fret board is very intriguing. I immediately saw its purpose, but I just as quickly started wondering how you cut it. Please explain.
It's an interesting instrument overall. I don't think I've ever seen one. It reminds me very much of a one-stringed mountain dulcimer. I like its simple, austere lines. Pretty cool! Please show us when you've finished.

Here is a video of what my Psalmodicon sounds like. I am bowing it but it can also be plucked. The Psalmodicon was originally designed to aid singing in churches that were too poor to own an organ. A numbering system was also developed to help the novice congregants to hear the melody. You will notice that I am also using a number board that I flip over for the second song. As for playing, the fingering is a little awkward and bowing requires just the right touch to get a good tone. I was worried that the sawtooth fretboard would be difficult to fret, but it is no more difficult than a fretboard with metal frets.
