adjustable saddles?

Post by Jason Brown »

Has anyone built with adjustable saddles? How do they affect the tone? Do they make intonation easier?

That depends on what you mean by "adjustable saddles". If you are referring to a Tuna-matic on an acoustic, it has been done before but is not great for sound or tone. Otherwise, most bone saddles are adjustable by filing intonation compensation into them and also for height.

Jason, are you referring to the adjustable saddles as patented by Kevin Pederson ? If not, then google "Kevin Pederson adjustable saddles" ... you will find discussions on the AGF about them.

I do not know much but will say what I have seen- (Oh I have never done anything with them)
The Art and Craft of Making Classical Guitars [Manuel Rodriguez] book has a brief but not instructional few pics of his individual saddles that move.
and the recent issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine (Jan. 2015 issue) has Willie Nelson's guitar on the back cover with what looks like an adjustable saddle.

Here's a pic of adjustable saddles on an Earthworks bass. I have no idea how they affect the sound, but they look relatively easy to make and adjust for intonation.

Maybe I can't fix it, but I can fix it so no one can fix it
