Jeez Chuck, you're a luthier, just make your own.

Take the one inch roll, unroll it across your shop. Then if you just draw a line 1/4 inch from the edge, and with your #11 blade, carefully cut along the line and then roll the tape back up...Bob's your uncle.

Or you could cut pieces off at 3/4 inch intervals, and rotate them 90 degrees and then attach them end to end to each other.

Any engineer could have figured that out after a little guidance from management.

Glad to be of help!

And you think I didn't do that?
Of course I used the 3/4"x1" bits rotated and stuck together technique. It's far superior.

And Bob is NOT my uncle. He's a bragger

Chuck, I wasn't trying to brag but rather suggest that you look in a paint store. I've also gotten the 2060 tape at auto parts stores and auto paint suppliers. I've gotten what I thought would be 3/4 from Amazon but it was metric and shy of the expected dimension. And if I were your uncle, I would be sure to have given you bad advice about money and women when you were younger. I use the green tape when I glue bindings. 3/4" is about the right size but I don't mind using the 1". It's a little stronger. The stretch in the green stuff is just about right (and, when used as masking tape, it doesn't wreck solvent based lacquer like the blue stuff).

Man, here in the Midwest we have so much 3/4" masking tape we have to keep our car doors locked at night. If you don't, when you come out in the morning your car will be filled to the ceiling with rolls from all the neighbors. I'm currently feuding with the guy next door because he keeps blowing all his rolls of 3/4" masking tape over on my lawn. Then I have to pick them up and my bin fills up. Since they made one of our garbage pickup days recycling only, we now only have two weekly 3/4" masking tape pickups. Sometimes, on Teusday mornings I have to wait until the truck arrive before I can get out of my driveway. I went over there to ask him to clean up his own 3/4" masking tape but he just taped my mouth shut. I probably should have seen that coming.

Yea, I'm using 2060 green as well. I'd love to get it a bit narrower.
And now that I'm all miffed about this and actually looking at this stuff...

The wide-ish stuff is 0.954" or 24.23mm - could someone at 3M just make up their mind here??
This dimension was obviously decided upon by committee.
It's not 1" - can't offend the metric (most of the) world
It's not 24 or 25mm - can't offend the 'Mericans

It's not even a reasonable number of Angstroms or Leagues.

All I know is - It is NOT a convenient size for masking off the FB between frets on a guitar.

Ah now I see why you are complaining. You wanted a convenient size for masking between guitar frets. I thought you were just being fussy. We actually get rolls in every width of every fret space for MOST of the common guitar scale lengths; but, they don't fall until the springtime. If you are in St. Louis in early March, give me a call. I'll let you rake up all you want.

7:00, 11:00, it doesn't matter to me what time you stop by. I have to take the whole month off to rake so I'll be home. . .

There's a hoe joke in there somewhere, but I just can't put my rake on it.

BTW, Jason must be at a band event this evening.

But seriously, I am going to have to buy narrower tape online, this is absurd!

The green stuff comes in lots of widths down to 1/4" at your local auto paint store but what you really might consider is buying big sheets of masking film and having them laser cut to mask the whole board in one go. What could possibly go wrong with that idea? Actually the stuff is fairly low tack so it wouldn't jump into a crumpled ball of sticky frustration at the first breath of a four letter word.

Wow! I thought it was just me. I continued to go back to the various stores thinking they just were out of it. Now I find it's a nation wide scandal ( except in the mid west ).

The band event is tomorrow night.

I'm between tapes at the moment, but now that you mention it, I do recall raising an eyebrow at the lack of narrower width tapes at the Depot last time I was shopping. The seemingly random measurements is funny. But I've taken to shopping for a lot of everyday stuff on amazon lately (if I don't need it right away). Here is some 3/4", probably cheaper than the hardware stores, and Prime shipping http://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Office-Mas ... sking+tape

Why not get a set of the StewMac fingerboard guards and forget the masking? Personally, I don't mask around frets. Too much trouble. Why would you want to do that anyway? (Maybe for Chuck it's to keep large larvae from emerging from the wood while he's working? I try not to use wood with Japanese Beetle grubs in it.)

I do maple fretboards - got to mask those.
Maybe I can't fix it, but I can fix it so no one can fix it
