On this video Scott Grove shows a resistance switch that will switch to 250k from 500k so that when in coil switch mode the pu sounds more like what we expect from a single coil. He shows an old gibson S1 electric that has this feature. Now I am having trouble understanding what is going on and hope you can enlighten me. If a 500k pot goes from zero to 500k and pot is short for variable resister, why not just find out the 250k position and use that or less? Obviously I am missing something, hope someone can help. Around 7 min into video he explains and uses the resistance switching in a Gibson S1 as example.

Potentiometers can be used as variable resistors or voltage dividers depends on the circuit. I didn't watch the video. I would need to see the circuit diagram to answer your question.

If your coil tap switch has a 500k resistor in parallel then it should emulate a 250k pot

resistance being calculated in parallel as

1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3... = 1/Rtotal
