Patrick DeGreve's Cedar 12 string, pictures

Post by Patrick DeGreve »

About this time last year I started a cedar 12 string. I had several questions about using cedar for the soundboard, and I got some very good advice from this forum. Now that it is finished I wanted to share the results, and thank Alan Carruth, and Kif Wood for the good advice they gave me. I am very happy with this guitar. I am having more fun with this 12 string than any guitar I have ever had. I can't wait to come home every day to play it. I have never had an acoustic 12, and this has a bright, and warm sound. I built this for my brother, but I might have to build another one for him, I don't know if I can give it up.
As Alan suggested, I added 10% thickness to the top, (to counter the less dense cedar) and did not feather out the top at the sides. I also made the bridge plate 2 ply, and glued 3 hardwood dowels through the bridge into the bridge plate, and caped them with abalone dots.
As Kif suggested, I used a laminate neck, and a dual action trussrod. The neck is 5 ply, the center is .5 " walnut, then on each side of the walnut is .25 " maple, then on each dide of the maple is mahogany. I am using .010-.047 light strings, and tuned down to D. The guitar is very easy to play, but still has a full sound. The back and sides are Bubinga, and trimed in Bloodwood. It is finished with Mohawk Lacquer. Thanks to the help I got from this forum I now have a very nice 12 string. Here are some pictures.

Nice work! What wood did you use for the bridge? This is inspiring- now I want to build one!
