Resetting an Alvarez

Post by Dave Anderson »

Hi guys, I'm working on an 86' Alvarez/Yairi Fy-65 -resetting the neck. It doesn't want to budge. I've steamed twice and its not cooperating. Anyone have advice on these necks. I sure don't want to cut the fingerboard but I did hear they used epoxy on some necks and are very tough to get off.
The Fb. overlay came up fine. I can't find much info on these guitars.

Dave, is it like this one? http://yairi.com/gtrsktor/indv_dtl/neck_ss.html

Fingerboard overlay??? I think you might benefit from removing the fingerboard so you can see the neck joint, though this can be a seriously risky to the neck if it doesn't go well.

Yes,thats the one Michael. I did take off the Fb. and see that its a tiny dovetail.I missed it with the drill bit.I dont like doing them this way ,like you said it can be risky. Now ,to get some steam into the dovetail.... Thanks.

Those necks have stacked heels, so beware of separating that joint when trying to steam the neck out. I went through a somewhat similar situation with an old Yamaha, and had to repair the heel before resetting the neck.
