Need to add new lead wire to Carvin humbucker

Post by Perry Underwood »

My question is in regard to the humbucker I mentioned in the post "Possible Ground Problem". I have removed enough of the tape around the coils to expose the wires.

Since the pickup's lead wire is short, my thinking is to replace the wire starting from the wires coming from the coils plus shield.

However, unlike some (perhaps more recent) Carvin humbuckers, my pickup only has three wires (black, white, and red) plus shield in the lead wire. The wire colors coming from the coils are two black and two yellow. The two yellow wires (one from each coil) are tied together and soldered to white. One black is soldered to black, and the other black is soldered to red in the lead wire. My thought is to add a fourth wire (green). The wires would be like this:

black (1st coil) to black
yellow (1st coil) to white
yellow (2nd coil) to green
black (2nd coil) red

Plus bare shield.

My question is will this work? I posted this question on the Carvin forum but no response, and it's been about four days.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Perry

Here's a photo. By the way, black is soldered to shield and red is hot in the lead wire.

Yes, it'll work. BUT you will need to make sure that your wiring of the pickup here matches whatever schematic that you'll be using. Almost every pickup manufacturer uses different color schemes, so just make sure your color scheme matches one of them and then you'll be able to use their four-conductor wiring diagrams.

This might help you decide the color coding.

This will give you a comparison to some of the other makers if you want to use someone else's diagram:

Here's one with colors:
http://www.guitartechcraig.com/techpckp/wirecodes.htm
Top coil is black(start) and green(finish)
bottom coil is white(finish) Red (start)
Your yellow wires should go to green and white respectively.

Mark, Joshua, and David thank you for your replies and the links to information about pickup wiring color codes. I'm glad I can add the fourth wire. I believe I will wire the pickup the way it shows in one of the links that David included.

Thank you again. Perry
