Hi Everyone. I am back here after a 4-year absence. I started building guitars in Phoenix around 2003 and have built four acoustics and seven electrics. I got laid off in 2009, moved to Utah and am just getting my (garage) shop up and running again. On to my question...
I am gearing up to build a new acoustic, my own OM-ish size/shape. I have some Myrtlewood that has been stored since my Phoenix Utah move, as well as a Carpathian Spruce top and some 60+ year aged Sitka Spruce. My dilemma - I just picked up some Ziricote on eBay that I couldn't pass up. It should be here mid-week and I'm debating tops. I've seen Sinker Redwood paired with Ziricote on a Breedlove and Arnt's beautiful guitar in "Wake me up, please..." thread. Given its density, I'm thinking Ziricote should be paired with something special. Tone-wise, I have nothing specific in mind except to maintain an articulate voicing (Surprise )
All four acoustics that I've built have been Sitka Spruce.
The B&S have been...
#1-EIR
#2-Honduran RW
#3-Madagascar RW
#4-Koa
Thanks!

Re: What top for a Ziricote B&S set?
I really like sitka spruce, as the species has such variation of density, grain spacing, color, etc. that you can find something for everyone. Great structural material, and can sound as good as anything. Can't go wrong with good sitka.

I second Michael's opinion. I built a dred using zircote and sitka. The guitar is a canon. But, as always, depends on what your looking for. If you want a mellower sound then go for the redwood or cedar. Bare in mind the zircote is a brittle sort of wood. The sides bend well, but, when working the hand tools extra caution is prudent...you'll see. Good luck!
Re: What top for a Ziricote B&S set?
Thanks guys. That will save me some money as I have four sets of aged Sitka from Alaska Specialty Woods that have been aging even more since my move. Just didn't know if I was missing out on another good pairing.
Good tip Judd. I was worried about bending Ziricote. I used some as trim on a humidor I built about 20 years ago. It was block plane versus Ziricote... Ziricote won!
