Body depth

Post by Mike Sandor »

The majority of guitars I have looked at have a taper to the body . Is the reason for the taper more of a comfort thing or does it help direct the sound out the sound hole or some other design issue? The reason I ask is I am getting ready to prep the back of two smaller body guitars and I am thinking that by not tapering them, the increased volume due to not tapering may help to increase the volume. Anybody have thoughts on this or should I taper as more traditional.
Thanks...

One of my friends, Mark Blanchard, kept track of the results a few years ago as he made some similar guitars with different taper. He said that the taper tended to make the sound more 'even'. One reason for that could be that it would 'spread out' some of the resonances, making the peaks less tall and covering a wider frequency range. I don't have data on this myself, but it makes sense.
