Im working on refinishing a guitar and have spent more time than Id care to admit researching whether Krylon spray will create awful finishes or not. Ive heard about plenty of horror stories of people having finishes that never fully dry or finishes that crack and wrinkle. Ive also seen some great success stories with the stuff. It seems that maybe people just lay it on to thick....

Is just it a matter of laying down a primer, and then spraying several thin coats within the specified time window, and then giving sufficient drying time before applying thin coats of clear coat?

What are your experiences with the product and what is the best clear coat to use with Krylon. Ive heard Miniwax Polyacrylic works well.

Im looking for a surf/seafoam green style finish which Krylon offers with Pistachio and Celery sprays.

It's been a while since I used it, but I believe Krylon is an acrylic enamel, which may be a little soft for a guitar finish. Automotive type sprays might be a better choice, they are generally acrylic lacquer, and they're available in a wide range of colors at any auto parts store. I wouldn't use that on an acoustic, but it should be fine for an opaque color on an electric.

If it is an enamel then little else will stick to it without some prep work.

I'm coming in a little late on this but I want to share my experience. I painted 2 guitars using krylonprimer paint and clear coat. I did not spray it on too thick or anything and let it cure for about 3 months or so. When I first leveled and buffed it out the finish looked great. I was really pleased with the results. Fast foward about a month or so later and both guitars had wrinkled and had that crackeled look. As far as hardening goes it's adequate but that wrinkling... I played it off like yeah that's what I was going for Anyway point is I'd stay away from krylon.

I've used rustoleum painters touch on several projects with very good results. No wrinkles or cracks and the clear coat hardens well. The downside of rustoleum is you have to watch what type of stands you rest the guitar on. I had bad experiences with some rubbers on stands melting away the clear coat where it was touching and ruining the finish.
