These pages are about handmade wind instruments, made by Žilvinas Gaižauskas born in Vilnius/Lithuania.
Saw is not used to split the wood. It's ment to be as natural as it can be.
The wood pieces are carefully chosen and are mostly found around the city.
The instruments are ment to be of shamanic purpose.


Since I was a child I used to split pieces of wood in two and try to make a pipe. I was astonished when I first saw long and big wind instruments. Still I was just a child. My father being an artist introduced me to famous sculptors Matschinsky-Denninghoff so I became their assistant just like my father. I had done a lot of artworks at their place in Germany, they have taught me a lot about art.
After many years of practicing different art forms I have met a few didgeridoo players in my second travel to Himalayas when I was 24years old. They explained me a bit about them. Since then it was always on my mind to make one. So I have started. And I don't know when I will stop.

These are cool, Žilvinas! So, when you say "hand split," you take a distinctive log/branch, crack it apart with a froe or hatchet, hollow out the inside, then glue it back together on the original split?

Yes, you are right, I glue in on the original split. So no wood is gone to dust. And the crack is nicer than a line.

Please check this link. The're a few pictures from an exhibition of old Lithuanian woodwind instruments. The techniques are old and are there are only a few instrument makers. Some try to reproduce, but I try to recreate. That's why I called them Moddoo.

Yes their blown like a didgeridoo, since a mouthpiece is simple dige-like but you can blow them as a trumpet or as a flute if you so desire. Since flute type playing was recently aplied to didgeridoos, by Koji Matsumoto, I met him in India and in Amsterdam too.

I use almost the same old methods ass for a shepherds trumpet. Although we have a few different trumpet like instruments around.
