Weeding tools?

Post by Matthew Lau »

I've found myself doing quite a bit of small scale gardening (mostly weeding).

Any tips on a good wooding tool?

I've ended up mostly just pulling by hand.

A variety of hoes is what you need. My favorite is a long handled, triangular shaped one similar to this one pictured here:

Hoes work best with newly sprouted weeds. For well-established weeds, pulling by hand is best, and be careful to get the full root out with it. The first few years with a new garden are a horrible task, and will test your resolve to the max! But once you get those first few years out of the way and most of the old, well-established weeds and what-not are removed, it becomes an easy, simple, and pleasant task of hoeing the new weeds as they come up every now and again.

Don't give up!

BTW, at the end of my first year with my new veggie garden, I was about ready to call it quits. There was just no end to the grass and weeds returning(I basically just tilled what was a lawn and made a garden of it)!!! But in the fall, I read about 'cover crops' and especially, about winter rye as a cover crop. Rye grain(not grass!!) being cheap, I bought a sack, and sowed the entire garden in the fall. It quickly took off! Winter came, smothered the rye, yet when spring returned, the rye took off again. I let it grow until I was ready to till and sow the new garden. Tilling the rye into the garden was an eye opener! Very little of anything -other- than rye had grown in the entire plot! The rye tilled into the soil nicely, adding to it, while keeping weeds and grasses at a minimum.

I plan on sowing a full cover crop of rye again this year, right after the last harvest. I didn't last year, and regret not doing so...

Lee Valley has the best garden tool selection. I suggest browsing there.

Most of the guys I know just use a tin can, poke a hole in the side, add some...oh...wrong kind of weed. Move along people...nothing to see here.

Well...since I stopped by, how do I keep the darn weeds out of my grass??

No, not a tin can. Use an apple, then you can just eat the evidence.

I mean, I don't know. My lawn is a mess!

Lol.

Thanks for the tips.
I really like this one particular tool: http://www.hidatool.com/gardening/weede ... ong-handle

On the downside, I get weird looks from the neighbors.

I actually decided against moving to that place, as I think that I'll lack energy to keep the plants alive.
Instead, I'll be focussed on patients, dental societies/study groups, and having a life with friends.

If any of you are in SF, feel free to stop by the practice where I'm at.
I'm on the corner of 21st ave and Noriega with Dr. Louie.
I can't offer much aside from some really good coffee.
