Ringing on my G notes.

Post by Kevin Bryden »

Hi chaps, it's been a long time since I've been on here. Hope you're all well. I received so much help here with my first acoustic.

Deb will be a big miss!

My acoustic, which I completed about 3 years ago, has started ringing on the G notes. It sounds like a muted harmonic. It's really bugging me. Any ideas on what it might be?

When I first completed it, the lower A's sounded a bit muted. That is less obvious now. It is a great guitar in all other respects.

Thanks in advance.

You might check the nut or saddle. Sometimes they will wear and cause something like that to happen.

You can try adding weight to see if the offending sound moves up or down in pitch. Rare earth magnets are great for this as they can be placed almost anywhere on or in the guitar. One inside and one outside at any spot you think might have an effect. For adding weight to the neck use a clamp on the headstock, with appropriate padding of course. Also check for any strings contacting anything other than the string post they are attached to. Chasing down noises can be frustrating at times but you won't find the problem unless you get busy and search.

It could be a truss rod rattle. It probably isn't, but it's really easy to check. Tighten is to see of the ringing goes away.

Fixed it. Caused by the d string nut slot. Just needed a little more relief to allow the string to bend. Sounds great again.

Yep - nut slot problems always seem to produce that sitar-like overtone problem
Sometimes the string is rolling back-and-forth, sometimes it is buzzing against a low edge of the slot, but that sound is what it produces.

it was a ringing harmonic type sound chuck rather than the sitar thing. it was the nut all the same.
