Center Strip on Super Chet

I'm sure this has been brought up before. Just can't find where.
Observe the decorative longitudinal inlay strip centered along the ribs of the classic 1970's Gretsch "Super Chet":

Would this strip typically be incised and glued in during manufacture before the multi-ply sides are bent; dadoed in after the sides are removed from the bender; or a groove cut into the top ply layer before everything is laminated in the press, and the strip glued down after molding?
Which is easiest, most likely, or most economical in the building process? Thanks as always for your expertise.
