My OTHER stringed passion...

Post by Thomas Dooher »

Seems I can't get away from things with strings... :D . Over the last few years, my interest in archery has been renewed, to the point of getting certified to run Cub Scout Archery at Day Camp in my district.

I was involved in archery in my late teens/early 20's, but kind of lost the 'bug', so to speak, when the bow I lent my friend got damaged (dork left it outside in the rain, grrrr) back in the early 80's.

Fast-forward a few decades...kids in Cub Scouts, archery at day camp, Adventure Camp, etc. I went to the WEBELOS week long camp 4 years running and became friends with the Shooting Sports Director. He let me use his bow during free time, etc. I won the Adult Shoot for Archery a couple years...realized how much I missed it.

Then, the hammer dropped on Day Camp, the year I agreed to help. A little old lady that lived near the park we did day camp in complained for years about the unsafe archery in the park (she never even went to see, just didn't like it...). One year, the park administation changed, she got the right person at the wrong time, and we were shut down, no archery. No matter that we have NRA/FITA/FTAA certified Range Safety Officers, have NEVER had any issues, injuries, close calls, or anything. %100 percent safety record.

A few years passed...and, the park people changed again. Little old lady had died the year they canceled the program, but the existing people kept denying approval. Until the next change...2011, we got verbal approval (but I wasn't available)....2012, we got written approval, and I agreed to run the range! I scrambled to get my own bow and accesorries, went to get trained/certified, and ran a great, safe, sucessful program.

Now, I have the bug again...and G.A.S...yes, it's as bad as with guitars. ArcheryTalk and MIMF compete for my attention. Intead of searching for Telecasters on Craigslist, it's Hoyt, Mathews, Bear, PSE, Samick....

I think I need help...
