can anyone solve the enigma of wudtone

Hello all,
I like the look of this new (to me, anyway) way of finishing a guitar: http://www.wudtone.com/shop/?wpsc-produ ... fer-girl-2
I particularly like that color.

Yet, I have to ask, what is this stuff? Is it two bottles of wipe-on varnish with pigment followed by a clear varnish? Is it polyurethane? What do you think. (Actually, as I write this it occurs to me that I should just ask them.)

I suppose the reason why I'm asking you all is that I'm wondering if any of you have ever used a white finish (stain or whatever) and covered it with color stain or paint or something.
Thanks for reading my vague and ignorant question.
Claude

This Surfer girl kit comes with a white pigmented base coat plus and a coloured base coat. You mix these together to get a lighter / darker shade exactly as you want and then apply that mix as the base coat. Keep some of each back in case you want to lighter or darker with the nect base coats etc. Also the number of base coats you apply determines the amount of grain left showing usually 4-5 is about right on swamp ash. The company seems to be very responsive and helpful so I would get in touch.

Thanks for you response tonefriendly, but I had gathered that much from wudtone's site.
What I was trying to get at was the chemical content behind terms like "base coat" and "toner coat."
Admittedly, my question was vague. Here's what I was hoping to get at. I hoped that someone who had used the product would say either that it was merely a generic blend of varnish, tung oil, pigment, and whatever that I could mix myself....OR that it was a unique and excellent product that I should buy.

Anyway, it's no big deal, I just wondered.

I looked at the ads, and they're a bit vague about the chemical composition. It could be some type of varnish, or wipe-on poly, or maybe even an acrylic lacquer. The point of the kit is that it contains all the components for applying the finish, and they_are_all_compatable. There's nothing particularly special, you could go to a finish supplier and get all the components separately, but then you have to do some testing to verify everything will work together.

hi there,
re varnish, or wipe-on poly, or maybe even an acrylic lacquer
it is none of these

the emulsion of product is a combination of natural oils, waxes and curing agents, it is a pretty new approach for guitars. It cures real hard, self levels lovely. There are no ols fashioned solvets involved . There is small amount of traditional oil based lacquer in the x gloss top coat.. The ebay feedback speaks volumes of how folks are getting on with it. Plus many forum posters in europe are onto their 2nd 3rd guitar with it.

The company will mix up a custom tint of you wish but check out the guitars on the web site. They have recently added a Dairy Blonde http://www.wudtone.com/2012/03/20/cowgirl/ and a Black Magic Woman http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos- ... 6407_n.jpg options .
