My Tripath finally arrived today. 6 weeks approx for the postage. They did say it takes a while - but I guess it hit the Xmas post. A speaker is next up and then I am good to go. Should have a new instrument finished in the white by then too. Let the fun begin.Simon Magennis wrote:Thanks for that. I ordered one of these. It will take a while to get here as its from China by snail mail but it was pretty cheap. I wonder how long it will hold up.David King wrote:A 20w Tripath "Class-T" amp stereo amp is a nice, cheap compact unit. You can find many brands like Lepei on Ebay.
I have downloaded a couple of generators. Looking forward to the testing. Just the speakers to buy now. Found lots of car speakers on the local ebay once I figured out how to search for them.

Speaking of Chladni, there was a great video posted of small object levitation and control using 3D standing waves.

My story includes failures so may be helpful of not. Also, kind of anecdotal. I only used it on one top so far.
I used this speaker
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013C ... UTF8&psc=1
BUT it is rather heaver but gave me nice patterns.
and an onkyo receiver I had lying around. I used a lexicon alpha on a laptop and VA software to drive the speaker.
This was after I burned out 3 other speakers which no one seems to know why. I did not use high volume on the stereo. Only about 4 out of 20.
I also tried some pawn shop speakers which burned out.
this one from parts express burned out: Visaton M 10 4" Sealed Back Cone Midrange Driver 8 Ohm
I had a lot of fun doing the chladni patterns this once. I like the science involved and the more specific end point of top tuning.
I am not selling anything but I did spring for the dvd from Alan Carruth (expensive and I am cheap for no reason most of the time) and the DVD was great. I am glad I go it. Have watched it 2 times no and Alan was kind of enough to do some corresponding with me. (I am often a flat thinker but have a good mind I am told. Old retired physicians are kind of insufferable I think like me)

How does this look as a suitable speaker?
http://celestion.com/product/137/tf0615/ Summary: 6", 8ohm, 85-6000hz, 100watt. Easy to get because the local ebay lists them. I plan to use the tripath amp mentioned earlier in the thread.

Max excursion is 2.5mm. That doesn't seem like very much but it might be plenty. Free air resonance is 107Hz, not sure how that compares but I'd avoid that frequency if you aren't mounting the driver in a box. 100wrms is good enough. You really just need to be aware that you can destroy any driver at very low power if you send it past it's maximum excursion. That might only take a few watts at the driver's free air resonance. Mounting it in a box with the prescribed volume and porting will keep that from happening. I would probably use a sealed box and make it quite small for practical reasons but I might run the numbers through a speaker box calculator first.
