Re: Putting a bandsaw onto a mobile base

Sorry everyone for responding so late I have a very active social schedule. ;-) I don't think I understand Randy's point. The drawing below illustrates what I was thinking of doing. This drawing looks like my garage except that the roof angle is not so steep & there are no collar ties. (Typical american style 20'x 20' Hip roof ) I guessing it's about a 140* angle. How can wrapping the chain around those two rafters take the weight of my 350lb. saw into the danger zone?
This conversation is only academic at this point, because I have the saw on a furniture dolly & am building a wheeled base. I wont need to lift the saw to get it off the dolly, but I would still like to understand this idea

This better illustrates what I was going to do. The blue dotted line represents the chain.

Do you have ceiling joists?

The triangle fromed by the joists makes the rafters much stronger. But only you can decide if your structure is capable of holding the weight. Or you could hire a professional engineer and let him take the liability.

You are absolutely right Berry, but I've solved the problem another way & so won't need a hoist.

I am still curious about Randy's assertion & why he said Not to do this. Though !

Robert,
Hopefully these links might help to picture the concern I expressed. I pictured you wrapping a chain around the joists or rafters snugly and then attaching the comealong to this chain which in my visualization would mean attaching to a very wide angle of the chain as it ran from the attachment to the joists.

In the attachments keep in mind the space separating the anchors is solid rock, not wood. What is important is the angle of the two arms and the resulting vector force the angle ends up generating.

This might simplify the concept better.

If you are connecting the two points with a loop of chain, then it raises the concerns of whats called the American triangle or American death triangle.

Now I see what your concern was, however my situation was much different. I don't think I would ever spread the chain for any reason. Intuitively I understand that If I went out far enough the Rafters would break.
Thanks for this . It's good to believe in science.
The job is done - no hoist needed

Good stuff Robert. After finally reading the whole thread, I realize I was just a distraction to Randy's more carefully considered response. I'll buy the beer.
