About the tune-o-matic bridge: I made a wood bridge for this guitar and for the one that came before it. In both cases, the sound was slightly muffled (for lack of a better term). Both were made from wenge. Maybe wenge is not a good choice for bridge woods?

Also in both cases, when I changed over to the tune-o-matic, the volume, sustain, and clarity all increased noticeably.

I'm clearly doing something wrong.

Another way to brighten up your wood bridge would be to add a bone cap to the top.

No matter the "logic" we try to apply, reality has a way of showing us the truth. I have found that heavier bridges often improve the sound of an archtop guitar, though I'm sure you can get to a point that the weight diminishes the results.
