Another Side Port Done

Post by Eric Knapp »

I got the side port for the second guitar I'm making in this run. I'm using curly maple for the binding of the guitar and the port. This one turned out well.

This shows the scarf joint. I'll take it!

If I like the sound of a side port I will be hooked, I think. I'm back on track after over a month of trying to figure out binding side ports.

Looks very good. I am sure the final effect with matching bindings and purfling and then under finish will be very classy!

Thanks, Mark. I'm really looking forward to seeing these under the final finish.

How do you do the binding inside the porthole with that double curvature? I can't get it done without it splitting. I tried using a wide strip over sized then cutting back to the contours of the side but cannot get it into the oval soundhole without splitting. Are they laminated? If so how. Please do share!

Thanks Eric that is great. The tapered plug idea is terrific as is cutting multiple veneers incorporating the purfling and I will be giving this a go on my next project. Now, where did I put that offcut of birch plywood I kept "just in case"
