A bunch of us from our local woodworking club took a field trip to a sawyer in SW Michigan today. Others were picking up stock for larger projects, but I have plans to start a short-scale base (maybe a 5-string) sometime this winter, and was looking for some kind of nice looking slab for the body. This is what I came home with. It's only 1 3/4" thick, so I might just use some of this as a cap, or I might slice through that radial crack you can see in the center on one side, re-saw and sandwich a piece of contrasting wood in the middle, or I might do a through-neck. This is all speculation at this point, but I figure once I have a profile, I can make a cutout and start looking at how I can "map" it onto this beautiful slab of walnut. I'd really like to somehow incorporate the sapwood you can see on one side, but as you can see, it doesn't extend all the way through the slab. Anyway, lots of possibilities with this.
Look what followed me home - body stock for the next build
