Hello,
(I'm posting so much because I'm on break from school and I want to do as much as I can before summer school starts. I will keep going then but not at this rate.)
I made a new neck for my rebuild project out of foam core board. I am very much a rookie and I just had to see what it was like in a faster timeframe than making a wood one allowed. When I made furniture I made drawings and models of a piece until I could build the whole thing in my head. That's what I'm attempting here. I just couldn't visualize a multi-scale neck and fretboard.
Well, here it is, sitting next to the ebony fretboard blank that will be part of the real neck.
It even fits in the guitar!
The multi-scale layout seems pretty accurate. This is a 26.5"/24.5" neck which will probably be the first multi-scale I'll get to try. I can't find one in my area.
I almost feel confident enough to start in on a wood one. I'm not sure I want to use the best wood I have for the first neck I build. I'm planning on doing a 5-piece maple with some dark wood stripes I have in the stack. I'm not sure what yet. Any feedback is very welcome.
Thanks,
-Eric

Using good wood will encourage you to be very careful and I am sure it will turn out nice. The first neck is always scary for folks until they actually carve it. Then you will know that it is not that hard.

Re: My Neck Prototype
Thanks. I've been looking through my wood and I don't think I have any plain maple, it's all pretty highly figured. Some is really thick so I'll have to get my bandsaw going. I'm almost done with it, I just replaced the tires and I'm looking for blades. My blades are all rusty or broken.Barry Daniels wrote:Using good wood will encourage you to be very careful and I am sure it will turn out nice. Speaking as someone who has done a lot of foam core fabrication through the years (mostly architectural models)... wow, that's a beautiful thing. Given that, don't sweat producing it in wood. It sure looks like you've got the chops, now you just need the experience. Can't wait to see you post the real thing...

Re: My Neck Prototype
Thank you, I am really excited to play a guitar I've made. I've waited too long to start but I'm determined. I'm getting my shop up and running one step at a time. Today I have to track down the one type of glue that the new tires for my bandsaw need. Details...JC Whitney wrote:Speaking as someone who has done a lot of foam core fabrication through the years (mostly architectural models)... wow, that's a beautiful thing. Maybe I can't fix it, but I can fix it so no one can fix it
