A friend of mine brought me his old beater SG that had been bastardized with strat pickups and asked if I could treat it to a refresh .
I don't typically do this , but he's been a dear friend for over 20 years , and I love SG's .
The top I picked is a set of curly redwood that had been waiting for the right project . Pickups are Harmonic Design P90's ( bless him for returning to a P90 ! )
A bit of cherry red dye , back sanded to bring out the figure and a lacquer finish . A nice surprise was the figure on the back that came out in the refinish.

dye and lacquer
In order to account for the thicker top I had to recess the bridge , I put a copper foil base plate under the bridge , then used a cover piece in the gap

Re: SG Lam top
That prettied it up! I'm not familiar with the fingerboard elevation over the top on an SG: what's the before and after difference?

Re: SG Lam top
There isn't much room , I planed the top down about 5/16 " any more and the truss rod would have been exposed .

That is a pretty piece of redwood. Beautiful grain.
I need your help. I can't possibly make all the mistakes myself!
