Solar burnt bass bamboo flutes

Post by Alex Pettit »

Here are a few I did earlier this summer off a template. The lens is from a 5-pack of fresnel lenses, and the burnt wood was then dug with a (lost) multi tool. These are all about 40" in the flute sections. Found a nice rolled sheet metal pipe and use that to break out the nodes. I'll link to audio after I research how it's done lately.

The holes are traced to the best prototype and a blank is ideally cut to the ends of nodes, if it doesn't end on a node it matches the length of the last tuned flute that size. The mouth side especially needs extra bamboo past the joints to protect the closed end. The open end can be drilled out with scissors and finished with a knife and sandpaper. When the tapping pipe can fit into the flute piece, you keep the closed end on the ground and hammer the pipe along the edges of the node. if you have a thin sheet metal pipe a grinding wheel will restore the cutting edge every few pieces.

Its a great idea of making bamboo flutes from sun burnt of wood. I will surly try it at my home if it really works for me.
