How do you sharpen a curved plane blade?

Post by Greg McKnight »

The little palm and finger planes, like Ibex brand, I mean. Is there a universal technique or sharpener of some kind that makes it easier? I'm not having any luck getting mine very sharp.

Greg, I use regular flat ceramic stones and move the bevel in a sweep across them, rocking side to side. A much different motion then the typical linear move used for straight chisels or plane blades. I finish it off by lying the flat back on the stone and polishing it on the fine stone. It's worked really well for me, but it sure is difficult to describe how!

I got this idea from an old issue of the GAL, I'm not sure of the issue number. This one is a modified plane and blade with a more curved bottom. Not a perfect solution but it works ok.

You should use flat ceramic stones on daily basis. It's take some time but will work
