hi Im using the shatten t2 thumbwheel controls and a production Armstrong floating pickup on this arch top build and need clarification on the bare ground wire placement.
The wire in the kit is 1 lead wire un shielded. I want to use a shielded 2 lead with bare wire to keep things quiet and for string ground. How to do it ? I plain just forget. the diagrams from shatten don't include any info on shielding.

Re: shielded wire for shatten thumb wheel controls
When you say 2 lead shielded do you mean 2 conductor + the shield? The shield is your ground, and presumably you only need one conductor. It should wire up just like any single pickup instrument pot with the ground on the left and the hot on the right and middle lug from the wiper going to the jack tip.

Re: shielded wire for shatten thumb wheel controls
ok I guess I didn't phrase my question correctly.Sorry 2nd try.
Id like to use 2 conductor shielded cable from the floating pickup to the Shatten thumb wheel control board pot. so at the pickup solder tabs, what do I do with the bare wire? does it get twisted and soldered to the minus pickup wire on the pickup end as well as the pot? and concerning the bare wire , would that be the case going from the board to the jack ground lug ?

I got some very good info for solving my question, seems it will be helpful to many,so Ill post this answers for the forum.

Hello Im using the t2 controlwith a kent armstrong floating pickup (2 solder tabs) on my archtop build.Im using a multi(4)conductor cable with bare wire shield. When hooking the minus lead from the pickup to pot and on to jack ,is it correct that I twist the bare wire and black (minus) wire together? if this is not correct please explain.
Ive downloaded your basic wiring and thumb wheel diagrams, but bare shielded wire is not covered. thank you greg m

Hi Greg,
What you're doing should be fine. The only critical thing in basically all of wiring is that the bare shield is always the outer-most wrap in order to provide RF shielding and that it is connected to ground through the output.
In the diagrams I am using the bare shield as the ground wire; I realize that I didn't make that particularly clear.
Best regards,
Les

ok I see now that the control is pre made with ground on tab 3 like the back of a pot correct?
so to clarify, im ok to join the bare wire and minus wire from pickup to jack right? thanks for the quick response. greg

Hi Greg,
For the thumbwheels:
As per our instruction sheet, the ground for each thumbwheel is indicated as pin 1 (both pin 1's are connected by the circuit board itself).
If we were looking at the back of a regular pot and the pins were at 7,6, and 5 o'clock, then yes, tab 3 (at 5 o'clock) would be ground.
You are ok to join the bare and the pickup minus to the minus on the output jack.
Best regards,
Les
