I need help splitting an MP3 file into several smaller clips

Post by Randy Roberts »

I'm hoping one of you might be able to help me split a long MP3 file (a 2 hour seminar on the 2014 farm bill AAAGGGHH!) into several smaller clips.

I have Adobe Premier Elements 4, but have never used it, and have never used any software like this nor do I care to loose the time to become proficient at it, as I just don't normally do this stuff.

Do any of you know how I might accomplish this for just this one time?. The current file is too long to attach to an E-mail, and I need to break it into several (probably 6)smaller files to be able to E-mail them.

Thanks in advance if you can help.

If you have never done it before, there is a bit of a learning curve Randy. if you don't want to go that road, then it would be best if you had someone to help you. If someone here wants to do that, you could put the file into a Dropbox account to get it to someone else.
If you want to do it yourself, you'll need to learn to edit audio. I would use Audacity for this if I were you. the Adobe program is probably much more complicated. Audacity is free software, and you'll need the LAME encoder as well for working with MP3's. Then after you have it installed, it's a matter of importing the MP3 file, and then cutting the parts out and saving each one as an MP3.

Audacity is really simple for this.

1. Import your MP3 into Audacity.

2. Highlight with the mouse the portion you want to make into a separate file, giving yourself a margin at beginning and end and copy it (Ctrl C).

3. Open a new copy of Audacity and paste the copied section in (Ctrl V).

4. Trim beginning and end by highlighting and pressing Delete.

5. Export result to MP3.

This is for the PC - Mac keyboard tricks will be different. Probably right clicking the highlighted portion works as well.
