stamps for serial numbers, stamping wood
looking for a set of stamps to stamp the wood like Fender does with the back of their headstocks. I don't care about numbers, but would love to stamp the name of the guitar, what do you use? where do you get them?

Re: stamps for serial numbers, stamping wood
I just use 1/8" letter stamps to stamp my name, the date and serial number. Mine are old ones that I purchased individually found in several hardware stores over the years.

I've been thinking about doing the same. It would be nice to make some kind of fixture to hold them straight across and spaced consistently. How about burning them in, instead of pounding/pressing.

There is a fixture called a type holder for aligning steel stamps. They aren't cheap http://www.mscdirect.com/browse/tn/Mark ... d=12103688
I would worry about overheating the steel stamps over time and killing their hardness. Of course that would hardly matter if you are only stamping wood but I use mine to mark all sorts of steel fixtures and tooling.
There are several companies that will make you a custom wood burning logo brand and those are actually very reasonable by comparison. http://infinitystamps.com/stamps_for_wood.html

David uses 1/8 inch size letters.
What size does everyone else use?
Be good. This is not what it may sound like!

I need your help. I can't possibly make all the mistakes myself!

I have 1/4" set of number and letter stamps. I would have bought 3/16" if I had found any. It doesn't really matter what size you use as long as you can read them.

Re: stamps for serial numbers, stamping wood
I carve my own stamps, using hard rubber glued to chunks of wood. Then I use a hobby knife to slice off the extra. I prefer to mark my work with my name the date, and not a serial number. But I have carved each number too, for when I make a limited series of something.
There are also stamps available (I have one) that will automatically rotate to the next number each time you press it down..

I designed a small logo brand and had it 3D printed in metal. It works well (once I figured out how to get a clean brand), and it was very cost effective.
