Geez. I found it interesting as well. I grew up going diving in that area with my dad. We never thought of it as being especially dangerous, and some of my friends still go ab diving up there. Red abalone shells were common fence decorations where I grew up. I also didn't much like abalone when I was young. People would talk about what a delicacy it was, and I remember wishing we could have sloppy joes or something from Chef Boyardee instead.
The really interesting thing about that article for me is that the guy they're quoting (Dinucci) was my high school shop teacher. I haven't heard that name for 30 years. I was terrible in shop, so naturally I ended up as a cabinetmaker, carpenter, and building contractor.

Don't know if anyone cares, but a lot of abalone die in the process as well.
