Is 1/4" enough meat from the edge of the headstock to the edge of the slot in a slotted headstock?
I have a arrow head shape or pyramid shaped headstock. I plan to use stewmac tuners 4593 this is the specs for them
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guit ... ?tab=Specs
Note that the string hole in the tuner is 1/2" in from the outside of the headstock.
If I make the slot 1/2" wide, this will leave 1/4" strip of wood on the outside of the headstock.
It took me 10yrs to build my electric guitar, I am in this project for the 2nd over a year. I become paralized in fear of making a mistake and trashing the guitar.
If 1/4" is sufficient for a slot head steel string guitar, I am good to go, if not, then I wonder what my options are?
In the case it is not would carbon fibre be inlaid on the outside of the headstock work?

In that case, I would just get the 3 on a plate tuners for slot head steel string guitar to cover up carbon fibre.
Your advice?

Headstock is triangular shaped, but has enough meat at top of headstock for tuners, so that is just the general shape, not literal shape

I think that 1/4" is good.

You are welcome...I have made a slotted peghead with an edge of 1/4", and it's fine. Keep in mind that a slotted peghead is usually a lot thicker than a solid one so it'll be stronger on edge.
