2nd Archtop

Post by Jeff Chumley »

I actually started this one about three years ago and then took a class (Dale Unger) where I built my first completed archtop. The body sat in my closet for a few years while I was doing other things. Now I am building some flat tops and I finished this one up along with them. It has a nice sound. A little brighter than the first one and a little louder. The first was European maple and spruce. This one is American maple but I can't remember what type. Sitka Spruce top and the binding is wenge. The first, being built in Dale's class was a Benedetto shape. This one I designed myself after looking at many archtops. It looks Benedettoish but there are definite differences if you see them together. The cuttaway shape is quite different and the lower bout contour as well. It is also a bit shorter overall.

No really good picks square on front and back but these are close.

Very sweet! Glad it came out of the closet (so to speak). It looks very clean and well-executed. I love the dark binding as contrast.
