I made a couple dozen of those, 20, years ago. Still use them today! I use them mostly in repair work, for closing violin/mandolin bodies, and such.
A simpler method of padding is to buy a length of the appropriate size vinyl "aquarium" tubing, slit it lengthwise, and "spring" it into place. If the tubing doesn't stay-on well enough, a dab of vinyl cement will fix it in place.
