Yes, I'm looking for a replacement for the Titebond glue I have been using. It is surprising how many hidden animal products are in everyday household items. I'll still use the Titebond while I look for alternatives. Thanks for the suggestions. It is a farily simple chemistry.

It's possible that Knox gelatin is now being made from plant products, as I'm told Jello is; easy enough to check. Lots of folks have used it as an emergency substitute for hide glue, and it's said to be even stronger. It may gell too quickly for some applications, though.

On that note, you -could- make hide glue from animals that have died of natural causes. Road kill comes to mind.

If you're vegan not only as a dietary choice but also because of a desire to not harm other living creatures, I see nothing wrong in using a animal parts/products from animals that have died of a natural cause. Same as seeking wood from blowdowns and/or standing dead timber.

Mario, that would be a perfectly acceptable solution, though it brings to mind a reclusive, woolly craftsperson that would use only daylight, wind power, and hand tools made from post-apocalytic salvaged metals to fashion mountain dulcimers decorated with elk horns and willow switches. The idea of custom making glue is also appealing. That's something Master Craftspersons like you end up doing, mixing custom paints and varnishes. I still have some nut and saddle blanks of bovine origin.

Casein glue is made from milk. Not vegan, perhaps, but vegetarian. And cows, unlike petroleum, are a renewable resource.

Be careful. I remember a time when some craftspeople adopted the wooly, reclusive, live-in-a-yurt-and-eat-only-mung-beans sort of lifestyle. They found the customers then assumed they had no need of money for what they did.

I've heard good things about the LMII instrument maker's glue. I believe it's an AR glue like titebond (but with less creep), and as such should also be vegan.
