Red tele with maple neck

Hi.
Not quite done, but almost there.

Body is danta,stained with feast watson proof tint red, cross linked shellac finish, maple neck, zero fret , angled headstock, birdseye fingerboard, sperzel tuners - other stuff Gotoh.

I can't get the exact 'redness' on my phone.

A slightly redder imitation of Jeff Gandy's orange tele which knocked my socks off! )

Looks great! Can you tell more about the cross linked shellac? I've heard a little about this before, but not much. How does it work, and did you have a good experience with it?

It has all the attributes of shellac...ie the affinty for wood, modes of application, no toxicicty etc but the fragility has been reduced by some chemical process. see: http://www.lmii.com/products/finishing/ ... rd-shellac
Being a lacquer it will blend into the underlying application and is amenable to repairing. It is also compatible with many other finishes eg nitro cellulose, water based lacquers...
To me the greatest appeal is that I can sit in the shed with the radio on,relax & apply via cloth applicator completely relaxed no mess, minimum expense,no spontaneous combustion or explosions & with due care & attention come up with a very attractive finish. It will 'go' over water dyed wood and can be used to apply alcohol soluble dyes as in this case. You don't get the glassy nitro look but rather the deep rich look like on pianos sort of like the third pic. I recommend that you experiment with it. There doesn't seem to be a downside provided the 'treatment' gives enough durability.

Anybody else used this U-beaut shellac product? David Schramm is quoted as liking it well. Do we have any other discussions on this product? Sounds cool.

I haven't tried it yet, but i plan to soon. A couple builders I know down here in OZ have gone to it and are liking it. I wouyldn't mind a harder, evironmentally friendly finish....
