My only worry is that the neck is a tad thinner than 1/2 in, .47 in to be exact. It is a very small amount, but will this cause the neck to snap with all of the string tension?

My solution would be to simply shape some more maple onto the back of the neck.

You should be okay but it also wouldn't hurt to apply a veneer to the back. I would use something dark, however, to match your stripes on the front. The maple glue lines would show whereas the dark veneer would look like you planned it. You won't want to add much or the pins on the tuners will get too low. I've seen folks use a wedge to step the tuners to provide a "faux" headstock angle effect but I've never done that. It would also add a little strength if your worried about it.
