1st guitar build

Post by John Rauch »

Any suggestions on books to read and any other advice on building a solid body electric guitar would be appreciated. Thinking about building one for my son. He had to sell his a couple years ago during some trying financial times. I have a large piece of Honduras Mahagony 3 inches thick and about 13 x 17 inches for the body. I have a large band saw and a router and a friend has a planer. I have reasonable woodworking skills. Probably will buy a neck. Thanks in advance. JOHN :?: :?: :?:

John,

If you would like, you can check out the blog listed in my signature. It is a step by step recount of the bass build that I have under construction from design through finish application (where I am now). It will show you the order and thought process that I went through to get where I am now. I will also be glad to answer whatever questions you have about it. It is a bass, but the concepts carry over.

John, let me suggest at least getting Melvyn Hiscock's book and reading it several times through. In addition, read as many "build threads" as you can find, particularly when done by relatively inexperienced builders (watch their problems, what tools they think they need, comments, etc). On that note, here is a thread on my first solid body electric build, I had some experience with acoustics, but this was a scratch built Les Paul clone.
