Re: Do you ever just buy jigs? Feeling guilty, but swamped
I have absolutely no qualms about buying useful stuff or components. What I don't have is enough cash to buy all the things I would like to. I also decided to clear out a bunch of guilt monsters this summer. All but one at a satisfactory level. I promised myself not to build anything else until I go...

Re: Guilt Monsters?
I have made reasonable progress on the guilt monster list I made above. One bridge missing and that guitar will also need some fp. In the meantime I made another one - put the fingerboard on just now. It has a number of re-used components. Might use a recycled bridge on it too. We'll see.

Re: bandsaw blade question
Rather than start a new thread I resurrected this one. Yesterday, I finally got round to a project I have been thinking about vaguely for years. New legs for my workbench to make it higher. I ripped them from some 5cm (2") wood I picked up from a bin at some point. Cutting this with my bandsaw ...

Guilt Monsters?
Some of you know Douglas Adams' "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" series. He also wrote two "Dirk Gently's Holistic Dectective" novels. From their comes the concept of the Guilt Monster. Something begins to grow mould in the fridge. You avoid cleaning it. It continues to grow. Ev...

Re: CAD modeling archtop guitars
I would saw the norm for instructional DVDs in the guitar building is $250+ When you said expensive I was envisioning $750 or something like that. :-) If I were interested in the subject, my only question would be if the material is good or now. Of the expensive luthier books I bought where I had &q...

Re: A New Solera With Sides.
What Clay shows is quite similar to what Cumpliano has with cork tile but a bit more refined. "Built-up" workboards are a common enough method. The important thing about the dome and neck angle is just that you get a system that works. The more precision and understanding at the initial ph...

Re: Rookie Bending Questions
I have to admit to having "exaggerated" about the machine I mentioned above.. Put it down to old age. :-) I am not 100% sure this is the video I saw originally but it is very close. He is only doing two sides at a time. But is sure looks pretty fast. There is also a video on the same chann...

Re: Rookie Bending Questions
... unless you are a factory trying to crank out dozens of sets per day. ... I would say 100's of sets rather than dozens. :-) Some one with a bit of experience, assuming the wood was at an appropriate thickness, can bend side quickly and accurately. Certainly half a dozens sets an hour would be ro...

Re: CAD modeling archtop guitars
What do you consider "crazy expensive"? I had a search for DVD/downloads and the only ones I found were $120 & $160? I have no idea of whether the DVDs in question are good, bad, or indifferent. If they are OK, then they strike me as pretty good value. I don't know if if any of the big...

Re: Thicknessing Binding.
I either buy ready made binding at specific thicknesses, get the supplier to thick some orphan sides for me and I cut them on the bandsaw, or simply plane orphan sides to thickness and cut on the bandsaw. I mainly use titebond original but ocassionally hhg for bindings. I am also not adverse to usin...

Re: HG wheel surfaces
As far as I recall there is resin on the wheel, like on a violin bow, which gives friction. I have a vague idea that some even had horsehair wrapped on it however, I can't find a reference for that so it may be complete nonsense.

Re: A New Solera With Sides.
I don't know the 1943 plan. For the 1937 GAL plan, some people do it with about 2 mm for neck angle and 1.5mm for the dome. The underside of the bridge locks in the dome and maybe increases. There is a lot of debate on that topic with some people even arguing that the older Hauser guitars were built...

Re: Tenor uke plans?
I did a search today and found a variety of free online plans. Pinterest seems to have a quite a bit of stuff too, but I am a luddite in terms of social media so I don't have an account there. Can't say anything about the relative merits as I have never built a uke before. Here are a few sources sta...

Tenor uke plans?
I recently got myself a cheap soprano ukelele kit. Total "construction" consisted of joining ready made next to ready made body, then glueing the bridge and sticking on the tuners. I have been amusing myself no end with it in the last few days. Now I fancy trying something a big bigger. :-...

Re: Finish for cheapie kit uke
I assembled the kit last night and this morning. In the end I gave it a light coat of shellac as I have a batch mixed. On closer inspection the fretboard and the bridge are both made from from thin strips of some kind of dark wood laminate together. It gives both a quite pleasing appearance. The nec...

Re: Finish for cheapie kit uke
Just thought I would update this. The kit arrived today. It sat in a distribution centre for the island from monday of last week until today. A reasonably competitive marathon runner could have made it there and back in 3 or 4 hours. (25-27km each way) :-). The body is not too bad and I was pleasant...

Re: Finish for cheapie kit uke
Thanks Chris. If I had 2 I could do a pink and a blue. Have you had a look at any of the other kits? I had a good look on the alibazar site. If I decide to make a batch of these as gifts, I think I would order direct from china. If you order 5,000 the cheapest kits are $3 each. Once you st...

Finish for cheapie kit uke
I ordered one of the cheap chinese uke kits where you just join the next to the body, put in the bridge and fretboard and add the tuning machines. Lets call it cheap and cheerful. I could scarcely get the plywood for what the whole thing costs. (unless I scored it from a skip/dimpster :-) ). It is s...

Re: Downdraft table - suction?
The point of the downdraft table is to collect the dust. The vac might work but something like this might work better, https://www.harborfreight.com/13-gallon-industrial-portable-dust-collector-31810.html?_br_psugg_q=dust+collector. It will still be noisy though. I've got my dust collector in an ou...
