Re: Tom Pettingill's P6 Deluxe Lap Steel
Some cool stuff from Billet Badges. Though I've not tried it yet, aluminum is another metal that can be etched with relatively home brew methods. Aluminum and zinc plates are a favorite amongst some artists for creating one offs and or plates for printing. With aluminum being cheaper and more readil...

Re: Tom Pettingill's P6 Deluxe Lap Steel
Where did you source the Nickel Silver metal for your nameplate? It was part of a larger order from an online metal place, but because their minimum shipping cost is obscene, I would not recommend them for just a smaller quantity to play with. A jewelery supply place like Metalliferous might be a b...

Re: Tom Pettingill's P6 Deluxe Lap Steel
Thanks Art and Pete! Art ... The Horseshoe pickup first showed up in the early 30's on Rickenbacker's Electro Hawaiian, aka the Frypan. Like most pickups, it has its own subtle voicing differences, but I'd generally describe it as a full and rich single coil that is very articulate with a sweet and ...

Tom Pettingill's P6 Deluxe Lap Steel
I haven't posted a project in a while, but just finished this one up and thought I'd share. I've always loved the classic B6 Bakelites and a B6 style build has been on my to do list for some time now. As luck would have it, a customer and I got to chatting and we decided to give it a go. Needless to...

Re: The next MIMF challenge- ideas anyone?
I think this has some potential with a lot of fun possibilities, maybe something like a single pickup build, that could cover a pant load of designs.Tim Douglass wrote:.... You could even specify that you can build anything as long as it uses a particular part ...

Re: Another Image Test Post ... or ... Lap Steels Rule :-)
Nice steel Peter! I'll bet it sounds great and is fun to play :) And I'm happy you could get some ideas from some of my stuff, but truth is that most everything I've done has been borrowed / inspired by the many great steels that have come before me. Steel guitar has such a long and rich history to ...

Re: Another Image Test Post ... or ... Lap Steels Rule :-)
Thanks Scott! These are all solid body, though I do have a couple chambered models / versions. Weight can vary a lot, but 8 - 9 lbs would be pretty average. Bill .. these are all in Tru Oil. There are certainly easier ways to go if doing a flat high gloss, but I just love how Tru Oil looks and feels...

Thanks Celeste and Roy :) Roy ... That one was the prototype for my Teardrop style. I had this hunk of khaya with the grain running running amok so I ripped it in half, flipped one side, and glued it back together to get that chevron pattern going. . http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g94/quarterbend...

Those bridges are nice little units and made by Dusenberg. I wish I had a little mill as I'd like to experiment with a couple ideas of mine and in particular, an 8 string version.Pete Halliday wrote:Tom--is the bender your own design or is that something commercially available?

Re: Another Image Test Post ... or ... Lap Steels Rule :-)
Thanks all :D Steve ... the fret marker strips are laminated from some .016" sheet aluminum from the hobby store and some .030" black fiberboard. The bezels for the dots are cut from 9/32" OD and 7/32" OD aluminum tubing also from the hobby store. Here is some .032" hobby st...

Hi Charlie and thanks! It is birdseye maple and some African mahogany / khaya. The inlay for the fret and position markers is aluminum and black fiberboard. Here is a little better pic of that.
