Hammered Dulcimer is finished!

I've finished my 12/11 dulcimer! Thanks for all the advice! I made this with walnut sides, birds eye maple pin blocks and western red cedar top. I put the sound holes on the underside. The top is removable, so if I need to I can add sound holes in the top latter. Need to get a wrench so I can instal...

Should I glue down side bridges & top?

Working on a 12/11 HD using plans from Folkcraft. The plans show the side bridge straddles the top and the pin block. I made the conclusion that this meant the side bridge and top are not glued down. Now I'm wondering if this was wrong as I'm not sure what is going to keep the side bridges from bein...

How to mark HD bridges

I'm progressing with my HD build and I'm at the stage where I'm making the bridges. The plans I have are different from many of the HD i've seen online in that the top of the bridge is solid and will have a single piece of delrin across the top and not the alternating black/white pattern I've seen e...

Hammered Dulcimer build

I'm working on building this 12/11 Dulcimer. There are no instructions - just the drawing. I will glue the pin blocks and frames to the base. The bridge braces will also be glued in place. What I'm not sure about is the soundboard and the side bridges - should they also be glued in place? I was thin...

Hammered Dulcimer: How many Hitch Pins?

I'm working on a 12/11 Hammered Dulcimer using plans from Folkcraft. The plans show a hitch pin for each wire. All of the dulcimers I've looked at have a single hitch pin for each 2 wire pairs. I'm thinking this was because the plans call for 3 wires per course. I'm only going to use 2 wires per cou...

Problem with dimensions for Hammered Dulcimer

I'm working on my first dulcimer and have a problem with the plans I have. There are 2 measurments that essentially set the length of the longest and shortest strings. The drawing says the short string measurement should be 13.125 in. If I put a ruler on the drawing, I see the line as being 13-in ev...

Making top for a hammered Dulcimer

Hi All! I'm in the process of building my first instrument - a hammered dulcimer. My woodworking skills are maybe a bit beyond beginner and I'm working from a plan from Folkcraft, which calls for the top to be 1/4-in thick and made from spruce, pine or redwood. I decided to make mine from western ce...

Hammered Dulcimer bottom panel

I'm building my first hammered dulcimer. The bottom is going to be maple plywood. The plans I have has the pin blocks and frames resting on top of the bottom panel - so the plywood edge would show. The plans call for a thin trim around all edges, which would of course cover the plywood edge. I'm thi...

Other names for rock maple?

I'm planning to build a hammered dulcimer. It's suggested that the best material for the pin blocks is rock maple. I went to my local wood store and they had western maple, eastern maple and birds-eye maple. Are any of these a substitute for rock maple? ( I asked at the store and the guy said they a...
